Commander Ben McCarty, a native of Erie, Pennsylvania, attained his commission in June 2006 through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at the University of Rochester, while earning a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He holds a master’s in National Security Affairs Europe, Eurasia from the Naval Postgraduate School.
 
As a division officer, CDR McCarty served on board USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DDG 53) as the Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer, and Commander, Mine Countermeasures Squadron Seven as the Operations Officer. Ashore, he served in the Current Operations and Future Plans Directorates for Commander, Task Force Seven Six.
 
CDR McCarty served first as Weapons Officer, and then as Combat Systems officer onboard USS ROSS (DDG 71), where he completed four FDNF-E patrols and was involved in Flag Officer Sea Training 2015, Joint Warrior 2015, At Sea Demonstration 2015, Trident Poseidon, Dynamic Manta, Operation Inherent Resolve, Operation Titanium Citadel, and myriad other evolutions and operations within the SIXTHFLEET Area of Responsibility.
 
Following his Department Head tours, he served as Blue Three Team Leader for U.S. Aegis Ashore Poland, and Officer in Charge of the Dam Neck detachment. In May 2021, CDR McCarty began his tour as Executive Officer onboard USS SHILOH (CG 67).  
 
His personal awards include the Navy Commendation Medal (four awards) and the Navy Achievement Medal (two awards).
