Cmdr. John Van Wagoner is a native of Annapolis, Maryland.  He is a 2005 graduate of the United States Naval Academy where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in English. Additionally, he is an alumni of the University of California, San Diego School of Global Policy, where he attained a master’s degree in International Affairs with a specialization in Asia-Pacific policy in 2020.

During his sea duty assignments, he completed division officer tours aboard USS Carter Hall (LSD 50) and USS Barry (DDG 52), serving as the Communications Officer and Ship’s Navigator, respectively. He also served as the Operations Officer aboard USS James E. Williams (DDG 95) and as the commissioning Operations Officer aboard USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000). He has deployed five times in support of Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, the Global War on Terrorism and other national tasking.

Ashore, he has served as flag aide for the Department of the Navy’s Chief of Legislative Affairs and as a SWATT Planner/Action Officer at Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Command Headquarters, N3/7 Branch. He is qualified as an Anti-Surface/Anti-Submarine Warfare Tactics Instructor.

Van Wagoner is currently serving as Executive Officer aboard USS Jackson (LCS 6) Blue Crew.

His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), as well as various campaign and unit decorations.
