Master Chief Kerwin is a native of New Jersey and enlisted in the United States Navy in July of 1998. He attended basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, IL. Upon completion of boot camp, he attended apprenticeship training at Engineman “A” School at Naval Training Center Great Lakes, Illinois before reporting to the Fleet. 

His first sea assignment was aboard USS ELLIOT (DD 967) where he was assigned to Auxiliaries Division. In 2000 he reported to USS VINCENNES (CG 49) where he served in the oil lab in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM. In 2002, he reported to the PCU for USS MUSTIN (DDG 89) as the Work Center Supervisor then on to USS GUARDIAN (MCM 5) where he was selected for Chief Petty Officer. 

Master Chief Kerwin reported to USS DEFENDER (MCM 2), where he served as the Main Propulsion Assistant and was part of a six-man heavy lift crew to transport the ship from Ingleside, Texas to Sasebo, Japan. In 2011, he reported to USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69) where he served as the Auxiliaries Division LCPO, then on to the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) in 2013 where he served as the Rector Auxiliaries LCPO. During this tour of duty, he was selected for Senior Chief Petty Officer. 

In 2015, he reported onboard USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN 76) as the Reactor Auxiliaries Division LCPO then departed for his shore tour at Ship Repair Facility/Regional Maintenance Center Yokosuka, Japan where he certified as a Fleet Diesel Engine Inspector.  He departed SRF in 2021 and went on to serve at Commander, Mine Countermeasures Squadron SEVEN as the N43 Department LCPO and Certified Fleet Diesel Engine Inspector. During this tour he was selected as a Master Chief Petty Officer and a follow-on selection for the Command Master Chief Program.

Master Chief Kerwin currently serves as Command Master Chief aboard USS CHANCELLORSVILLE (CG 62), which is homeported in Yokosuka, Japan.

His personal decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal (five awards), Navy Achievement Medal (five awards), Good Conduct Medal (seven awards), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and various campaign, expeditionary, and unit awards. He is a graduate of the CMC/COB course Class 235, Senior Enlisted Academy Class 206 (Khaki Group) and holds a Master’s Degree in Forensic Science from Saint Leo University.
