Hailing from the great state of Arizona and the beautiful mountain town of Pinetop-Lakeside AZ, Master Chief Settles enlisted in the Navy in 1998 through NRD Phoenix and attended Recruit Training Command and Quartermaster “A” school in Great Lakes, Illinois.
Upon graduating from QM “A” school he reported to the USS HERON (MHC 52) in Ingleside TX. While onboard HERON he earned all of his basic DC qualification and finally QMOW. Shortly after earning his QMOW he transferred across the pier to MCMROTCREW HOTEL on board USS CHIEF and quickly advanced to QM3. After completing a deployment to the 5th Fleet AOR he transferred to ACU-1 in 2000.
Upon arriving to ACU-1 in San Diego CA, he was assigned to LCU 1633 as Craft Navigator. He completed two Western Pacific Deployments, both of which were to the 5th fleet AOR while his craft was attached to USS DUBUQUE. During this time, he earned numerous DC, ENG, and Deck qualifications to include Load Master and finally ESWS. Here he advanced to QM2.
After completing his tour at ACU-1 in 2003 he transfered to NRD Phoenix and was assigned to Recruiting Station Silver City NM. While stationed in Silver City he earned his Recruiter in Charge qualification and numerous station awards to include Small Station of the Year as well as advancing to QM1.
Following a successful tour at NRD Phoenix in 2006 he reported to PCU GRIDLEY (DDG 101) in Bath ME as the LPO. After the commissioning of DDG 101 and numerous certifications and qualifications he was promoted to Chief Petty Officer.
Upon a lengthy yet successful sea tour on USS GIDLEY he was assigned to ATG Pacific North West in 2010 as the Topside LPO; this included Navigation, Seamanship, and ATTT. While at ATG he trained and assessed numerous navigation teams on various platforms and he himself earned his Afloat Training Specialist (ATS), Master Training Specialist, and his small craft pin all while attending classes to earn his degree in general studies.
After his tour at ATG he reported to USS RUSHMORE in November 2013. Shortly after reporting he was selected to Senior Chief Petty Officer. As the NAV/ADMIN DLCPO he successfully completed numerous inspections, navigation certifications, two deployments to 5th fleet, Rim of the Pacific Exercise, and an Oceania Maritime Security Initiative (OMSI).
He moved on from a successful tour on RUSHMORE and joined BUPERS 32 as the Surface Operations ECM/TECHED for OS, QM, BM and MN.
Once selected to Command Senior Chief he reported to his last command, LCS 17 INDIANAPOLIS stationed in Mayport FL. He is currently serving as Command Master Chief onboard USS CHOSIN (CG65)
Master Chief Settles’ awards include numerous Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, Navy Good Conduct Medals, Battle “E” and various unit and service awards. He is a qualified Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS), Afloat Training Specialist (ATS), and Master Training Specialist (MTS).
