Command Master Chief (SW) Sherman J. Adkins, native of Ventura California, joined the Navy on October 29, 2002. In January 2003, he completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois and received orders to Hull Maintenance Technician “A” school. In July 2003 he reported to his first ship USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) in Mayport, Florida, completing a highly successful deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, promoted to Petty Officer Second Class and qualifying Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist.
In June 2007, upon completion of his first sea tour, he reported to USS Doyle (FFG 39) where he was promoted to First Class Petty Officer and served as Leading Petty Officer in Engineering Departments’ Repair Division. During his sea tour he completed a West Africa deployment and a UNITAS South America deployment. In August 2009 he transferred to his first shore command at NNSY Fleet Maintenance Branch (FMB) in Norfolk, Virginia as Leading Petty Officer for the submarine weld and ship fitter shop.
Upon early voluntary termination of his shore duty in June 2011 he reported to USS Arlington (LPD 24) and was selected to Chief Petty Officer where he served as Repair Division Leading Chief and Ballast Control Officer and earning his Engineering Officer of the Watch (EOOW) qualification. Upon a successful tour onboard USS Arlington he reported to USS Frank Cable (AS 40) on October 2015 and selected to Senior Chief Petty Officer. He served as the Repair Department LCPO and Assistant Repair Officer.
In November 2019 Senior Chief Adkins reported to Naval Air Forces Command West Training Teams on and was selected to Master Chief Petty Officer. During this tour Master Chief Adkins served as the lead TYCOM Force 3M Inspector, Technical Feedback Report Manager, and Assistant Force Quality Assurance Officer for all eleven AIRLANT/AIRPAC CVNs.
In December 2022 Master Chief Adkins reported to USS THEODRE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) where he served as the Engineering Department Master Chief (Top Snipe) leading over 250 Sailors in all shipboard engineering faucets to include ROOSEVELT’s primary weapons system, the steam catapults.
In February of 2024 Master Chief Adkins was selected for the CMDCM Program and currently serving as the Command Master Chief onboard USS Halsey (DDG 97).
Master Chief Adkins is authorized to wear Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (10 awards), Good Conduct Medal, 8 sea service ribbons, and various campaign and service ribbons.
