Command Master Chief Dan Miles began his military career in 2001, when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Upon completion of basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois, he reported to Basic Enlisted Submarine School and Fire Control Technician “A” School in Groton Connecticut. From there he reported to his first command aboard USS Alabama (SSBN-731) in Bangor, Washington. He rose through the ranks serving aboard USS Houston (SSN-731) forward deployed to Guam, and later at Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron ONE, San Diego, California. He affiliated with the Navy Reserve and cross-rated to Gunner’s Mate in 2011, was promoted to Master Chief in 2020, and selected to serve as a command master chief in 2022.
His shore assignments include Center for Information Dominance Learning Site, Yokosuka, Japan, Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific, San Diego, California, and Navy Talent Acquisition Group Southwest, San Diego, California. He also completed an individual augmentee mobilization as the joint force command senior enlisted leader for the Office of the Defense Representative, Pakistan. His previous assignment was command master chief for Military Sealift Command Cargo Afloat Rig Team.
His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy Achievement Medal (six awards), as well as numerous unit and campaign awards. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from San Diego State University. He is a graduate of the U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 222/Gold) and the Command Master Chief Course (Class 22130).
He returned to active duty in 2023 and assumed the duties as the Command Master Chief for USS Mustin (DDG-89) in April of that year.
