Master Chief Geoffrey Hunley enlisted in the Navy September 30, 2003 from The Dalles Oregon and graduated recruit training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, Illinoi followed on by completion of Hospital Corpsman “A” School. He then attended Field Medical Service School in Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California.
He reported in July 2004 to his first duty as a junior line Corpsman with First Marine Division. While there, he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as a line Corpsman and subsequently as a Military Transition Team Corpsman. While there he was promoted to Petty Officer Third Class. He reported in July 2007 to Naval Hospital Bremerton as the Emergency Department Leading Petty Officer. From March 2008 to February 2009 he deployed as an Individual Augmentee CASEVAC Corpsman with HMM-161 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. There, he was promoted to Petty Officer Second Class.
In July 2010, HM2 Hunley attended Submarine Independent Duty Corpsman School at the Naval Undersea Medical Institute in Groton, CT. While in school he advanced to Petty Officer First Class. He graduated at the top of his class in September 2011 and was assigned to the USS Nebraska (SSBN 739) in Bangor, WA. While onboard the USS Nebraska he was promoted to Chief Petty Officer and qualified Diving Officer of the Watch. In July 2014 the submarine entered the shipyard at Puget Sound Naval Ship Yard for a refueling overhaul. During his time in the shipyard HMC Hunley volunteered to deploy on the USS Maine (SSBN 741) to fill a critical billet.
In November 2015 he reported again to Naval Hospital Bremerton where he was assigned to the Urgent Care Department. He was promoted to Senior Chief Petty Officer and subsequently became the Directorate Leading Chief Petty Officer for the Surgical Services.
His next sea duty would start in September 2018 when he reported to fill a critical billet at sea aboard the USS Bremerton (SSN 698). However, in February 2019 he was transferred to the USS Michigan (SSGN 727) while on deployment due to a medical emergency of their IDC. He served aboard the USS Michigan (SSGN 727) until again he was transferred in January 2020 to the USS Louisville (SSN 724) to support the submarine force. While onboard the USS Louisville (SSN 724) he was promoted to Master Chief Petty Officer and was a part of the decommissioning crew for the submarine. Master Chief Hunley assumed the duties of DLCPO Branch Clinics onboard Naval Medical Readiness and Training Command Camp Lejeune North Carolina in April 2021 until Jun 2022.
He assumed duties as the Command Master Chief of U.S. Naval Medical Readiness and Training Command Guantanamo Bay Cuba on 8 Jul 2022. He applied for the Command Master Chief Program in Jan 2023 and was selected.
He assumed his duties at the Command Master Chief of USS JOHN S. MCCAIN DDG-56 on 15 Aug 2023.
Master Chief Hunley’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (6th Award), Navy Commendation Medal with Valor, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4th Award), Combat Action Ribbon, and numerous unit and campaign awards. He is qualified to wear Enlisted Submarine Warfare, Enlisted Fleet Marine Force Warfare, and the deterrence patrol device (4th Award). He is a graduate of the Navy Senior Enlisted Academy.
