CDR Joseph Leahy hails from Lynbrook, New York and is a 2009 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Oceanography.
CDR Leahy’s Sea tours include division officer assignments as repair division and first division officer in USS Bataan (LHD 5) and damage control assistant in USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98). He served as chief engineer aboard USS Truxtun (DDG 103) and successfully completed a historic Hybrid Electric Drive install, Dry-Docking Selected Restricted Availability, the Basic Phase, and screened Early Command. In his second department head tour, he served as chief engineer aboard USS Antietam (CG 54) and maintained the highest operational tempo and most reliable 7th Fleet Unit through a nine-month bubble ship deployment as USS Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group (RRNCSG) Air and Missile Defense Commander. Following department head, CDR Leahy was assigned to Expeditionary Strike Group TWO (ESG 2) as N43A, where he deployed in support of Commander, Task Force SIXTY-ONE/TWO (CTF 61/2) and completed the Amphibious Warfare, Warfare Tactics Instructor (WTI) course of instruction. He assumed duties as executive officer of USS New Orleans (LPD 18) in December 2023.
CDR Leahy’s shore tour was as instructor and officer in charge in Surface Warfare Officers School Norfolk, Damage Control Assistant/Senior Enlisted School. While on shore duty, he earned a Master of Science degree in Marine Engineering from the United States Merchant Marine Academy. CDR Leahy’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (one award), Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), and Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards).
