Cmdr. Patrick Kiefer is a native of Kansas City, Missouri, and Seattle, Washington. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology from Oregon State University (OSU) in Corvallis, Oregon, and received his commission through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program at OSU in 2006. Additionally, he earned a Masters of Arts in National Security Affairs focusing on the Far East, South East Asia, and the Pacific from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California in 2013.

At sea, Kiefer served on USS McCampbell (DDG 85) as the Main Propulsion Division officer and as the Navigator; on USS Shiloh (CG 67) as the Weapons Officer and Combat Systems Officer; and on USS Green Bay (LPD 20) as the Executive Officer. McCampbell, Shiloh, and Green Bay were all assigned to the Forward Deployed Naval Forces in Japan.

Ashore, Kiefer served on the staff of U.S. Naval Forces Europe/U.S. Naval Forces Africa/U.S. Sixth Fleet in Naples, Italy; on the staff of the Missile Defense Agency in Dahlgren, Virginia; and on the staff of the Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center – Surface Warfare Technical Division in Dahlgren, Virginia.

Cmdr. Kiefer took command of Littoral Combat Ship USS Savannah (LCS 28) Gold crew on Jan. 16, 2024.
