CDR Matthew Martinez is a native of Anaheim, California. He graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles in May of 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Political Science. He holds a Master’s degree in National Security Affairs of Europe and Eurasia from the Naval Postgraduate School. CDR Martinez commissioned through Officer Candidate School, Newport, Rhode Island in March of 2009.
At sea, CDR Martinez served as the Repair Officer and Anti-Terrorism Officer onboard USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53) where he deployed to C5F AOR. Following that tour, he served as the Training Officer onboard USS Stockdale (DDG 106) where he deployed to the C5F AOR.
He completed his first department head tour onboard USS John Finn (DDG 113), serving as the Plans and Tactics Officer. For his second department head tour, he deployed to the C5F and C7F AOR while onboard Amphibious Squadron Five as the Future Operations Officer. Completing an Individual Augmentee assignment under US Army Pacific, he completed the first Joint Training Team deployment in Taiwan.
Ashore, CDR Martinez served as Chief Staff Officer of Surface Development Group One. As the Director of Civilian Institutions at the Naval Postgraduate School, he managed a $6.5 million budget funding graduate education for Naval Officers attending civilian universities. He also served as Commander, Naval Surface Force, US. Pacific Fleet’s Flag Secretary and staff Executive Officer.
CDR Martinez has been awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal (three gold stars), the Navy Achievement Medal (one gold star), as well as various service medals and unit awards.
