A native of Munich, North Dakota, Commander Daniel Hooge commissioned through Officer Candidate School after graduating from the University of North Dakota with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. Additionally, he earned a Master of Engineering Management degree from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA.

His first sea-duty assignment was First Lieutenant aboard USS Shiloh (CG 67) in Yokosuka, Japan. After completing nuclear power training, he served as Reactor Electrical Division Officer aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) in Norfolk, VA. As a department head, he served as Operations Officer aboard USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53) in Pearl Harbor, HI and then as the Reactor Electrical Assistant aboard USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) in Bremerton, WA where he completed his command at sea qualifications. 

Ashore, he served as Shift Engineer at Nuclear Power Training Unit in Charleston, South Carolina. Upon completion of his department head tours he served on the Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board, then as Future Ops for Commander, Destroyer Squadron 26 (CDS 26), and finally as the Globally Integrated Exercise Event Planner on the Joint Staff.

Commander Hooge served on Navy and Joint teams that earned the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and two Battle Efficiency “E” Awards. His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal among others. 

Commander Hooge relieved as Executive Officer of USS Charleston (LCS 18) in October 2024.
