16 January 2025 CAPT Kim is a native of Los Angeles, California and was commissioned in 1996 from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) NROTC program with a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations. Specializing in East Asia, he gained fluency in Korean and Japanese. CAPT Kim has a Masters in Operations Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School, a Masters in Defense Systems Technologies from the National University of Singapore, and has completed a Federal Executive Fellowship at Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.
 

CAPT Kim is a career Surface Warfare Officer and has served on Frigates, Littoral Combat Ships, Cruisers, Aircraft Carriers, Amphibious Assault Ships, Mine Warfare Ships, Expeditionary Sea Base, and Hospital Ships. His assignments have taken him to over 27 countries globally, as well as numerous cities within the US. He has served in military operations involving Iraqi, Afghanistan, Iran, North Korea, China, and Russia as well as with numerous Allied and partner nations. His last sea assignment was Amphibious Squadron THREE embarked on USS MAKIN ISLAND & USS TRIPOLI where he commanded a 3 warship squadron comprised of over 5,000 Sailors and Marines.

His shore assignments include Flag Aide to Commander Logistics Group Western Pacific, Theater Security Cooperation Action Officer at Commander 5th Fleet, Resource Analyst and Deputy Executive Assistant at US Central Command, Resources and Experimentation Assistant Chief of Staff at Surface & Mine Warfighting Development Center, Chief of Staff at US Naval Forces Korea, and Deputy Director and Executive Assistant at OPNAV N95.

He is currently the Commanding Officer of USS JOHN L. CANLEY (ESB 6), forward deployed to Indo-PACOM.
