A native of Massachusetts, Commander Long graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a minor in French. She earned a Master of Science in Operations Research from the Naval Postgraduate School. As a fellow with the Secretary of Defense Strategic Thinkers Program, she earned a Master of International Public Policy from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).
 

At sea, Commander Long completed her division officer tours as First Lieutenant and Damage Control Assistant on board USS Mitscher (DDG 57). She completed her department head tours as Engineering Officer on board USS Pinckney (DDG 91) and Material Officer (N4) for Commander, Destroyer Squadron 31. She also served as Flag Secretary and Assistant Chief of Staff for Administration for Commander, Carrier Strike Group One, embarked on board USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70).

Ashore, she served as a fellow with the Strategic Warfighting Innovation Cell (OPNAV N73) and as Special Assistant to the Chief of Naval Operations as part of the Strategic Actions Group (N00Z). Her most recent assignment is Executive Officer, USS SAMPSON (DDG 102).

Commander Long’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), and various unit awards.
