Commander James “Jared” Grina, a native of Missoula, MT, enlisted in the Montana Army National Guard in 2001 as an all-wheeled vehicle mechanic. He was honorably discharged in 2007 after completing a deployment with the 1-189th Aviation Battalion to Balad, Iraq.
He was commissioned in the Surface Warfare Community in 2008 through Officer Candidate School. Upon commissioning, he began his career on USS DECATUR (DDG 73) as the Main Propulsion Division Officer.
His second tour was as Navigator onboard USS MOBILE BAY (CG-53) and Department Head tours included Operations Officer on USS THE SULLIVANS (DDG 68), Operations Officer on USS CHOSIN (CG 65), and Plans and Tactics Officer on USS LAKE ERIE (CG 70). Post Department head tours were with Carrier Strike Group Three as the Assistant Chief Staff Officer for Material and Logistics N4, Damage Control Assistant on USS NIMITZ (CVN 70).
Shore duty assignments included the Naval Post Graduate School and Instructor at Surface Warfare Officer School and Executive Officer for Afloat Training Group Pacific Northwest.
His personal awards include the Meritorious Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medals, Navy Achievement Medals, Army Achievement Medal, Reserve Component Achievement Medal, various unit commendation medals, and the Iraq campaign medal with battle stars.
