A native of Syracuse, New York, Captain Mahon graduated in 2001 from Norwich University in Vermont, commissioning through the NROTC Program.

Captain Mahon’s afloat assignments include Electrical Officer on USS MAHAN (DDG 72) from 2001 to 2003, Navigator on USS BUNKER HILL (CG 52) from 2004 to 2005, Operations Officer on USS ROOSEVELT (DDG 80) from 2008 to 2009, and Future Operations and Readiness Officer (N5/7) for Destroyer Squadron 23 from 2010 to 2011. In 2011, he was an Advance Team Officer-In-Charge for the Pacific Partnership mission, leading planning and liaison teams in the countries of Vanuatu and East Timor.

Captain Mahon was the Commanding Officer of Patrol Coastal Crew FOXTROT from 2012 to 2013, commanding USS ZEPHYR (PC 8), USS TYPHOON (PC 5), and USS MONSOON (PC 4). From 2017 to 2018, he was the commissioning Executive Officer of USS RALPH JOHNSON (DDG 114). He then commanded USS RALPH JOHNSON (DDG 114) from 2018 to 2019.

Captain Mahon’s shore assignments include the National Military Command Center (NMCC) in the Pentagon, where he was the Branch Chief for Integrated Air & Missile Defense in the Joint Staff’s Operations Directorate (JS J3) and an Alternate Deputy Director of Operations in the National Joint Operations & Intelligence Center (NJOIC) from 2022 to 2024. Previously, he was the Director of Navigation and Shiphandling Training at the Surface Warfare Schools Command (SWSC N72) in Newport, RI from 2019 to 2021. Other shore assignments include Deputy Executive Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Integration of Capabilities and Resources (OPNAV N8) from 2015 to 2016 and maritime strike analyst in the Navy Staff's Assessments Division (OPNAV N81) from 2013 to 2014.

Captain Mahon graduated in 2022 from the Eisenhower School at the National Defense University in Washington, DC, receiving a Master of Science in National Resource Strategy, with a concentration in the Finance Industry. Previously, he graduated in 2007 from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, with a Master of Science in Operations Research.

Captain Mahon’s decorations include the Battle Efficiency Ribbon (four awards) as well as various other personal, unit, and campaign awards.
