Colonel Peter Rummler enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1994 and attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego (MCRD SD) followed by infantry training at the School of Infantry – West and assignment to Weapons Company 3/23. Concurrent with his service in the Marine Corps Reserve, Col Rummler attended Louisiana State University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology.

In 2000, Col Rummler received his commission and attended The Basic School (TBS), graduating as an honor graduate. Following TBS, he attended Armor Officer’s Basic Course in Fort Knox, Kentucky and was assigned to 1st Tank Battalion, 29 Palms, California, serving as platoon commander, company executive officer, and Scout Platoon Commander and deploying in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In 2004, Col Rummler was assigned to 1st Fleet Anti-terrorism Security Team (FAST) Company, Marine Corps Security Force Battalion. While assigned to FAST, Col Rummler deployed with his platoon to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and to Yokosuka, Japan. Upon returning from deployment, Col Rummler was assigned as the company executive officer supervising deployments and refuel/defuel operations in support of the US Navy.

In 2007, Col Rummler attended Expeditionary Warfare School where he graduated as a distinguished graduate. Following school, he assumed command of Company C, 1st Tank Battalion in 29 Palms, California. After company command, Col Rummler served as current operations officer and assistant operations officer of Regimental Combat Team-7 for its 2009-2010 deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Upon completion of this deployment, he was reassigned to 1st Tank Battalion for duties as battalion operations officer until his transfer to Marine Corps Command and Staff College (MC CSC).

Col Rummler attended MC CSC from the summer of 2011 to 2012 where he graduated as a distinguished graduate. Upon graduation he was assigned to 4th Marine Division in New Orleans, Louisiana where he performed the duties of the Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff, Capabilities and Requirements. During this assignment, Col Rummler was accepted to the School of Advanced Warfighting (SAW).

Upon graduation from SAW, in the summer of 2015, Col Rummler was assigned to Marine Forces Command (MARFORCOM). Col Rummler performed the duties of regional planner in the MARFORCOM G 3/5/7. In 2017 he was selected for command of First Recruit Training Battalion, MCRD SD.

In 2019, following command, Col Rummler attended Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies as a member of the Secretary or Defense’s Strategic Thinkers Program. Upon graduation, he was assigned as military assistant to the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy.

In the spring of 2022, Col Rummler attended Joint and Combined Warfighting School. Upon completion of this school, Col Rummler assumed the duties of the G 3/5, 4th Marine Division. While performing these duties he was selected as the Commander of Recruit Training Regiment (RTR), MCRD SD. He served as commander of RTR from June 2023 to July 2025.

In July 2025, Col Rummler assumed his current duties as the Deputy Commander of Expeditionary Strike Group 3.

Col Rummler’s decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal with three gold stars, Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Marine Corps Achievement Medal with “V”, and the Combat Action Ribbon with gold star. Additionally, Col Rummler has been awarded the Marine Corps Distinguished Marksman Badge.
