Commander Brandon Bonton is a native of Houston, Texas. He received his commission from the United States Naval Academy in 2008, earning a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He also holds a Master of Engineering in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Old Dominion University.
Afloat, he served as Electrical Officer, First Lieutenant, and Anti-submarine Warfare Officer in USS ANZIO (CG 68), Damage Control Assistant in USS PORTER (DDG 78), Chief Engineer in USS HALSEY (DDG 97), and Combat Systems Officer in USS JOHN S MCCAIN (DDG 56) while forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan.
His ashore assignments include Surface Warfare Officers School, where he served as a Basic Division Officer Course Instructor, at Carrier Strike Group 15 as the Director of Opposition Forces, and the N7 Assistant for Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet.
Having previously served as Executive Officer in USS CURTIS WILBUR (DDG 54), he assumed command of the ship on 24 October 2025.
His awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various unit and service awards.
