A native of Columbus, Georgia, LCDR James Lewis is a 2006 graduate from Albany State University, where he received a Bachelor’s of Science in Criminal Justice and received his commission in 2010 from Officer Candidate School.

LCDR Lewis completed sea tours as Communications Officer and EKMS Manager onboard USS GONZALEZ (DDG 66), Anti-Terrorism Officer and Acting Weapons Officer while fulfilling a gapped billet on USS PHILIPPINE SEA (CG 58). During his division officer tours, he deployed to FIFTH Fleet, Supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM as an independently deployed unit. He also deployed to FIFTH Fleet, supporting Operation INHERENT RESOLVE as the Air Defense Commander for the GEORGE H.W. BUSH Carrier Strike Group.

As Department Head, LCDR Lewis served as the Combat Systems Officer and the Operations Officer in two consecutive tours onboard USS DETROIT (LCS 7). He deployed to FOURTH FLEET in support of C4F/JIATF-South’s Campaign MARTILLO, a multinational effort that targets illicit trafficking routes in coastal waters along Central America. His efforts led to his nomination as SUW21’s SWO of the Year and a finalist for CNSL 2020 SWO of the Year due to his excellence in warfighting, leadership and mission accomplishment.

Ashore, he was selected to serve as the EKMS Manager at Assault Craft Unit Four (ACU 4), handling all EKMS for Expeditionary units at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story. LCDR Lewis was also the Assistant Maintenance Officer at Commander, Naval Surface Squadron Fourteen (CNSS 14) at Naval Station Mayport. He completed his postgraduate degree while assigned to U.S. Naval War College in Newport, RI, earning a Master of Arts in Strategic Studies and the completion of Joint Professional Military Education Phase I. LCDR Lewis most recently served as the Placement Officer for Major Staffs/Commands (PERS-442) in Millington, Tennessee, where he managed URL control grade manning for over 2500+ billets in support of over 66 Major Staff UICs to include the establishment of new Fleet MOC requirements.

LCDR Lewis’ awards include the Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards) and Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), and multiple unit, campaign and service awards.
