A native of Chicago, Illinois, Command Senior Chief Johnny Velazquez graduated from Roberto Clemente High School in 2000 and attended the University of Illinois before joining the Navy. He reported to Recruit Training Command in 2007 and was rated as a Sonar Technician (Surface) (STG), completing both "A" and "C" School in San Diego, California.
His sea tours include serving aboard USS Stethem (DDG 63), stationed in Yokosuka, Japan, and a later tour as the Leading Chief Petty Officer aboard USS Antietam (CG 54).
Ashore, Velazquez served at the Command Submarine Pacific Navigational Data Center as a Tactical Coordinator in Yokosuka, Japan, and as the N7 Training Senior Enlisted Leader at Commander, Naval Air Pacific at North Island Naval Base, California.
Velazquez is a graduate of the Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 264 Grey) and the Command Master Chief / Chief of the Boat Course (Class 25140). His personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards), the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and various unit and campaign awards.
