CAPT Warren Smith is a native of Upland, California and a 1998 graduate of Gordon College in Wenham, MA. He received his commission through Officer Candidate School in December 1998. He also attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, where he earned a Master’s Degree (with Distinction) in National Security Affairs for the Far East and East Asia.

CAPT Smith’s initial sea duty assignment was to USS HEWITT (DD 966) in San Diego, CA where he served as the ship’s Strike Officer. Subsequent sea tours have included assignments on USS BENFOLD (DDG 65) in San Diego, CA as Assistant Operations Officer, and as Operations Officer onboard USS STETHEM (DDG 63) in Yokosuka, Japan and USS CAPE ST GEORGE (CG 71) in San Diego, CA. Most recently, Smith served as the Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of USS MUSTIN (DDG 89) homeported in Yokosuka, Japan from July 2015 to September 2018.

Smith has been assigned to several staff positions ashore. In 2003, he was assigned to the US Naval Forces Central Command/Fifth Fleet as a TLAM Officer and Future Operations Planner. In 2010, Smith was assigned to the Chief of Naval Operations staff, first within the Surface Warfare Division (N86) as a Ballistic Missile Defense Requirements Officer and as the Deputy Executive Assistant to the Director of the Navy Staff. Smith served on The Joint Staff (J-3) as a continuity planner and as the Executive Assistant to the Deputy Director for Nuclear, Homeland Defense, & Current Operations (J-33). Most recently, Smith served as the Surface Warfare Liaison in the Navy’s Office of Legislative Affairs (OLA).

He has been awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (3 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (5 awards), the Navy Achievement Medal, as well as numerous campaign and unit awards.
