A native of Coxsackie, New York, Commander Joey Vitollo entered the Navy in1998 as an Electrician's Mate.  He earned his commission,  graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science degree in History.
 
CDR Vitollo's previous at sea assignments include Gunnery Officer and Repair Officer in USS NITZE (DDG 94), Operations Officer in PATROL COASTAL CREW GOLF, Engineer Officer in USS BULKELEY (DDG 84), and Combat System Officer in COMDESRON 31. Throughout his career he has completed multiple deployments and supported numerous operations including Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and operations in support of multi-national counter-piracy patrols in the Horn of Africa.
 
Ashore, CDR Vitollo earned a Master's of Arts degree in National Security Strategic Studies from the Naval War College while serving as an instructor of Naval Science at the U.S. Naval Academy.  He also served in COMMANDER TASK FORCE 64, the executive agent for Integrated Air and Missile Defense to COMMANDER SIXTH FLEET, as Future Plans Lead (N5) and Chief of Staff.

CDR Vitollo's personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal and various unit, service and campaign awards.
