Captain Hattaway is a native of Montgomery, Alabama. He attended the United States Naval Academy where he graduated in 1996 with a Bachelors of Science in Systems Engineering.
Following initial training at the Surface Warfare Officers School in Newport, RI, CAPT Hattaway reported to USS HEWITT (DD 966) serving as Gunnery Officer and later fleeting up as Combat Systems Officer. In October 1999, he reported to USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63) as MP-3 Division Officer and Engineering Training Officer where he qualified as Engineering Officer of the Watch on the oldest engineering plant in the Navy.
In January 2002, CAPT Hattaway reported to USS MITSCHER (DDG 57) as Engineer Officer, assisting in the development of early ballistic missile defense efforts in Operation JUNIPER COBRA and executing strike missions in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. Following this tour, he reported to the staff of Commander Destroyer Squadron 22 as Materiel Officer (N4). During this tour, DESRON 22 integrated the first Spanish AEGIS frigate into battlegroup operations and deployed with THEODORE ROOSEVELT Carrier Strike Group.
CAPT Hattaway assumed duties as Executive Officer in USS JOHN S. McCAIN (DDG 56) in October 2010. As Executive Officer he participated in Operation TOMODACHI, conducting search and rescue and disaster relief efforts in the wake of the Tohoku earthquake, tsunami, and Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear disaster. In April 2012 he fleeted up as Commanding Officer where he conducted numerous Joint and multi-national exercises with the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force and Republic of Korea Navy and executed several real world Ballistic Missile Defense missions in the Seventh Fleet area of operations.
Completing command in October 2013, CAPT Hattaway reported to the staff of Commander Carrier Strike Group Ten as the Surface Operations/Future Plans Officer (N32). While a member of the CSG-10 staff, he deployed to the Middle East as HARRY S. TRUMAN Carrier Strike Group conducting integrated operations with CHARLES DE GAULLE Carrier Strike Group and commenced the first Optimized Fleet Response Plan as DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER Carrier Strike Group. In October 2018, CAPT Hattaway took command of USS LEWIS B PULLER (ESB-3) Gold. Throughout three deployments to the Middle East, he and the hybrid crew of military and civilian mariners integrated the first Expeditionary Sea Base into CENTCOM plans and operations supporting Army, Marine, Mine Countermeasures and Special Operations Forces. In August 2020, he detached from PULLER and reported as the Deputy Commodore for MCMRON 7.
CAPT Hattaway’s shore tours include the Staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, Assessment Division (N81) where he served as the Section Head for World Class Models and INDOPACOM’s Joint Inter-Agency Task Force West as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Plans and Engagement (J5) and the Chief of the Commander’s Action Group.
CAPT Hattaway is a 2008 distinguished graduate from the Naval Postgraduate School earning a Master’s of Science in Operations Research and awarded the Chief of Naval Operations Award for Excellence in Operations Research, and a 2016 distinguished graduate from the National War College earning a Master’s of Science in National Security Strategy and awarded the BGen Sayer award for excellence in writing.
CAPT Hattaway’s awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (3), Navy Commendation Medal (3), Navy Achievement Medal and various unit and service awards. He is a designated subspecialist in both Operations Research and Modeling and Simulation.
