Cmdr. Herndl is a native of Durham, North Carolina and graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.  He enlisted in the Navy following Sept. 11, 2001 as a Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate and earned a commission through Officer Candidate School.
 
At sea, he served as Combat Information Center Officer and Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure Boarding Officer aboard USS Hawes (FFG 53), deploying to U.S. 6th Fleet and U.S. 5th Fleet for maritime interdiction operations.  After completing Nuclear Power School and Prototype, he served as Reactor Mechanical Division Officer aboard USS Harry S Truman (CVN 75), deploying to U.S. 6th Fleet and U.S. 5th Fleet in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  He served as Operations Officer aboard USS McFaul (DDG 74), completing an extended independent deployment in support of a special operations task force in the Africa Command area of responsibility.  He served as Main Propulsion Assistant aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), completing a Docking Planned Incremental Availability and preparations for deployment. 
 
Ashore, he served as an Action Officer in the Joint Operations Directorate as well as Flag Aide to the Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, in which he completed a Masters of Engineering Management from Old Dominion University.  He served as Junior Board Member on the Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, conducting Operational Reactor Safeguards Examinations of all aircraft carriers and Atlantic based submarines.  He most recently served as Integrated Missile Defense Watch Commander at Joint Force Component Command for Integrated Missile Defense, United States Strategic Command.
 
His current assignment is executive officer, USS Gabrielle Giffords Blue (LCS 10).
 
Cmdr. Herndl served with teams earning four Battle “E” Awards. His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (seven awards). He is a recipient of the Surface Navy Association Admiral Arleigh Burke Surface Warfare Operational Excellence Award.
