Master Chief Jacob Shafer is a native of Wauseon, OH. He enlisted in the Navy in 1997 and reported to basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes. After graduating from basic training, Fire Controlman (FC) “A” school, and Close in Weapon System (CIWS) “C” school, he reported to his first assignment aboard USS RUSSELL (DDG 59) in Pearl Harbor, HI.
Other afloat assignments included USS BENFOLD (DDG 65) as Over the Horizon Targeting Supervisor, LCS Crew 209 as Command Senior Chief/Master Chief, Commissioning USS MONTGOMERY (LCS 8), and Command Master Chief USS MICHAEL MURPHY (DDG 112). Ashore Master Chief Shafer has served as an instructor at CIWS “C” school, earning Master Training Specialist, selected for an IA in support of the US Army’s C-Battery 3-4 ADA of the 82nd ABN Div. in Balad Iraq conducting the Counter Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar mission, and as in faculty advisor at the US Navy Senior Enlisted Academy.
He assumed duties as Command Master Chief, USS MICHAEL MONSOOR (DDG 1001) in May 2019.
He is a graduate of the Senior Enlisted Academy Class 165 (Green), Command Master Chief Course.
Master Chief Shafer’s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (Four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and various campaign, service and unit awards.
