CAPT John C. Kiefaber is a native of Great Falls, Virginia. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1997, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science. He was designated as a Naval Aviator in 1999 and in March 2000, he reported to HSL-44 at NS Mayport. There he deployed aboard the USS KLAKRING (FFG 42), USS JOHN L. HALL (FFG 32), and the USS CAPE ST GEORGE (CG 71).

In March 2003, CAPT Kiefaber reported to HSL-41 in San Diego, California for duty as a SH-60B Fleet Replacement Squadron Instructor Pilot. While there, he received his Executive Masters in Business Administration from the Naval Postgraduate School.

In February 2006, he reported aboard the USS BOXER (LHD 4) and served as the Hangar Officer, Aircraft Handler and Assistant Air Officer. 

In February 2008, CAPT Kiefaber reported to HSL-45 and served as the squadron NATOPS Officer, Safety Officer, and Maintenance Officer. Additionally, he deployed in April 2009 as the Helicopter Detachment Officer-In-Charge aboard the USS GARY (FFG 51). 

In January 2011, he reported to United States Southern Command in Miami, Florida to the Joint Strategy, Policy and Plans Directorate (J-5). From May 2011 to December 2013, he served as the Aide-de-Camp for two SOUTHCOM Commanders.

After transitioning to the MH-60R, CAPT Kiefaber reported to the “Wolf Pack” of HSM-75 in December 2014 as the Executive Officer, and was the Commanding Officer from March 2016 until June 2017. 

In July 2017, he reported aboard the USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) as the Operations Officer.

In May 2019, CAPT Kiefaber reported to Commander, Naval Air Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet as the Assistant Chief of Staff (ACOS) for CVN Training and Readiness (N7).

In October 2020, CAPT Kiefaber reported aboard the USS TRIPOLI (LHA 7) as the Executive Officer.

His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (one award), and various unit commendations and service/campaign medals.
