Cmdr. J. Brandon Cornes is a native of Baltimore, Maryland. He is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and was commissioned in 2001. He holds a Master of Business Administration in Financial Management from the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, California.
His sea duty assignments include auxiliaries officer and navigator aboard USS Underwood (FFG 36); chief engineer aboard USS Roosevelt (DDG 80); chief engineer aboard USS Gettysburg (CG 64); and executive officer aboard USS Tulsa (LCS 16). During these tours, he deployed overseas four times and operated in the European, Africa and Central Command areas of responsibility.
Ashore, he served as the ship maintenance and operations support budget analyst for the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Financial Management and Comptroller); held numerous positions in the Joint Staff, J8; and as the director for Undersea Systems in Program Executive Office Integrated Warfare Systems, developing and fielding the latest surface ship sonar systems.
His current assignment is commanding officer, USS Tulsa (LCS 16) Blue Crew.
His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards) and various unit commendations, campaign medals, and service ribbons.
