Command Master Chief Chun is a native of Harbor City, California and grew up in Hawaii. He graduated from a Department of Defense High School in Subic Bay, Republic of the Phillipines in 1990. In October 1991, he enlisted in the United States Navy as a seaman recruit at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and reported to Naval Training Center (NTC) Orlando, Florida. After graduating NTC, he attended and graduated from Construction Mechanic “A” School in Gulfport, Mississippi.
His first assignment was with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 133, where he completed deployments to Guam and Sigonella, Sicily, San Diego and Rota, Spain. In February 1996, he transferred to Commander Naval Special Boat Squadron in Coronado, California and was the shop supervisor. In January 1999, he was assigned to Special Boat Unit Twelve, MK V Special Operations Craft Special Maintenance Support Team LPO and completed two deployments to Central Command.
In May of 2003, he transferred to NMCB 3 and completed deployments as the Civil Action Team LPO and as assistant convoy commander deployed to Iraq. After leaving NMCB 3 in 2006, he transferred to Naval Construction Training Center, Port Hueneme, as the Alfa Co LPO and Chassis Phase head where he qualified as a Master Training Specialist. In September of 2007, he was selected to Chief and in January 2008, he took over as the Naval Military Training LCPO. In January 2009, he was moved to lead the CM-C1 Advanced schoolhouse director. His next assignment was to NMCB 4 as the Kandahar Airfield Officer in Charge, and also completed a tour as Convoy Security Element Officer in Charge and Convoy Commander throughout the Helmand province in Afghanistan. In March of 2012, he transferred to the Naval Facilities Institute as LCPO and completed MTS mentorship program and was advanced to Senior Chief. In October of 2012, he then was transferred to Naval Construction Group 1 as the N4C, Logistics Department LCPO, N43 Table of Allowance Division Officer (TOA), and N43C TOA LCPO. In September of 2016, Master Chief Chun recently completed a tour as Alfa Company Chief at NMCB 5, Port Hueneme, California and was selected to Command Master Chief.
Master Chief Chun is a graduate of the United States Navy Senior Enlisted Academy, the Command Master Chief Capstone Course. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Organizational Management with a concentration of human resources from the University of Laverne.
Command Master Chief Chun’s personal decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal (3rd), Army Commendation Medal (2nd), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (5th), Combat Action Ribbon, as well as various unit and campaign awards
