Captain Justin Long is a native of Sacramento, CA, and received his commission as a Surface Warfare Officer through the U.S. Naval Academy in 1997. His initial duty assignment was aboard USS CUSHING (DD 985) in Yokosuka, Japan.
Returning stateside, he was assigned as Training Officer in USS INGRAHAM (FFG 61) in Everett, Washington. In 2003 Commander Long received his MBA from the University of Washington while also serving as a Training Liaison Officer for the Afloat Training Group PACNORWEST. After completing his degree and Department Head School in Newport, Rhode Island, he returned to Everett as Operations Officer in USS RODNEY M. DAVIS (FFG 60).
Following that tour, he reported aboard the USS CHANCELLORSVILLE (CG 62) in San Diego, California as Operations Officer and, later, acting Executive Officer. On deployment to Southeast Asia he served as Air Defense Commander and Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) Commander Liaison Officer on the staff of Commander, Carrier Strike Group Seven in USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN 76). There, he was a lead planner for Exercise MALABAR 2008 with India and was also named Tactician of the Year for the strike group.
His next shore assignment was as Ballistic Missile Defense Operations, Plans and Wargames Officer for Commander, Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. It was there that he helped manage the Fleet’s BMD forces, including the SBX radar.
He then reported to the Afloat Training Group Middle Pacific as Executive Officer and Senior Assessor, where he inspected Pacific Fleet ships for warfare readiness and certified them “ready to deploy” and also conducted Ballistic Missile Defense Certifications for all Pacific Fleet ships.
CAPT Long’s command tour was as CO of Navy Recruiting District New England where he led the finest recruiters, support staff and civilians in the nation searching seven states and Europe for America’s best and brightest to join the ranks of the United States Navy.
He received his Masters in National Security and Strategic Studies at the Naval War College in Newport, RI, where he was also an Arleigh Burke Fellow and studied with the renowned Gravely Group’s Advanced Research Projects, focusing on future BMD war fighting. He then went on to become Executive Assistant for Commander, Naval Recruiting Command.
His current tour is as Deputy Commodore for MCMRON THREE in San Diego, Ca.
His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Navy Commendation Medal (six awards), Joint Service Achievement Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal (two awards).
