Commander Heilman is a native of Barberton, Ohio and a graduate of The Ohio State University. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering and was commissioned an Ensign in June 2001. After commissioning, he attended flight school in Pensacola Florida and was designated a Naval Aviator in 2003.

After initial Fleet Replacement Pilot Training, he reported to the “Easy Riders” of HSL-37 in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii for his first sea duty assignment. During this tour, he served as the Quality Assurance Officer and completed two deployments in support of Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and the GLOBAL WAR ON TERRORISM. Following his initial sea tour, CDR Heilman was assigned to the “Doer Birds” of VT-2 as a T-34 Instructor Pilot at NAS Whiting Field, Milton FL.

He served as a primary flight instructor for new students and also had the privilege to serve at the Flight Instructor Training Unit (FITU) responsible for training fleet instructor pilots. In May of 2010, CDR Heilman reported to USS CARL VINSON where he served as the Assistant Air Operations Officer and Air Transfer Officer. During this two year tour, he deployed twice to FIFTH FLEET in support of Counter Terrorism Operations in Afghanistan while also earning his Command Duty Officer Underway qualification.

In August 2012, CDR Heilman reported to the “Magicians” of HSM-35. As a plank-owner of the squadron, he played a critical part in establishing the Navy’s first composite squadron comprised of both manned and unmanned aircraft. There he qualified to fly both the MH-60R Seahawk and MQ-8B Fire Scout Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.

He also served as the squadron’s Aviation Safety Officer, Training Officer, Operations Officer, and as the Officer-In-Charge of Detachment EIGHT on board USS Lake Champlain. Upon completion of his Aviation Department Head tour, CDR Heilman reported to Commander Helicopter Maritime Strike Wing Pacific to serve as the Wing Training Officer. He was responsible for managing the training and readiness curriculum, qualification process, and simulator devices for all Pacific Fleet HSM Squadrons.

In January 2018, he reported to Mine Counter Measure Division THREE ONE in Point Loma California where he is currently serving as the Executive Officer. CDR Heilman has accumulated over 2,500 flight hours, primarily in the SH-60B, MH-60R, TH-57 and T-34.

His personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal as well as other personal, campaign and service ribbons.
