Past Command Master Chief, USS Green Bay (LPD 20)

11 March 2021 Command Master Chief Scott Vlaming is from New Lenox, Illinois and joined the Navy in 1994 where he attended Recruit Training Command in Orlando, Florida. Upon completion, he attended Interior Communications Electrician’s “A” School in San Diego, California.

He earned his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Sothern Illinois University in 2016. At sea, he served as an Interior Communications Electrician onboard USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC 19) and USS FIFE (DD-991), both in Yokosuka, Japan.

After completion of close-in weapons system (CIWS) “C” school, he reported as a CIWS technician onboard USS PORT ROYAL (CG 73) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and deployed in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM. As weapons department Leading Chief Petty Officer (LCPO) onboard USS HARPERS FERRY (LSD 49) in Sasebo, Japan he deployed to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations. He later served as the Electronic Material Officer for Commander, Amphibious Squadron THREE (CPR 3) while embarked on USS PELELIU (LHA-5) in San Diego. Shortly after reporting to LHA-5, he deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations. During his tour as combat systems LCPO onboard USS THACH (FFG-43), where he led the ship through it’s decommissioning.

On shore, he served as Fire Controlman “A” school instructor at Great Lakes, Illinois where he qualified as a Master Training Specialist. He also served as Commander, Littoral Combat Ship Squadron ONE, Training Department Combat Systems Training Team Lead.

In December 2016, he graduated from the Senior Enlisted Academy and was subsequently selected for the Command Master Chief Program, completing the Command Master Chief Course in June 2017. After completion of the Command Master Chief course, he reported to and served Command Senior Chief onboard USS MONTGOMERY (LCS 8) Blue Crew from September 2017 until February 2020.

Master Chief Vlaming’s personal awards include Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), Navy Good Conduct Medal (five awards), and various service and campaign awards.
