Captain Bill Johnson, a Wisconsin native, began his naval career in NROTC at the University of Minnesota graduating in 1993 with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. He later earned a master’s degree in Education from the University of New Haven and a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies at the Naval War College.
His operational tours include a Division Officer tour on USS BOSTON (SSN 703), Navigator / Operations Officer on USS CHICAGO (SSN 721), Executive Officer on USS LOUISIANA (SSBN 743)(G), Commanding Officer on USS MAINE (SSBN 741)(B), and most recently as Commanding Officer on USS OHIO (SSGN 726)(G). He completed four deployments to various locations including the North Atlantic, Eastern Pacific and Western Pacific as well as seven strategic deterrent patrols.
His shore assignments include serving as an instructor at Naval Submarine School, as the Deputy Commander for Readiness for Submarine Squadron SEVEN, and the Branch Head for Operations, Evaluation and Training at Strategic Systems Programs. Additionally, he has a break in active duty for three years working as a high school math teacher in Chicago and serving in the Naval Reserve at Assault Craft Unit ONE.
His personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal. He is most proud of being part of submarine crews having earned the Arleigh Burke Award, the Omaha Trophy, a Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendations, and six Battle Efficiency “E” awards.
