Capt. Gilbert Clark is a native of San Diego. He was commissioned in 1998 upon graduation from the United States Naval Academy, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in History with Merit. He is a graduate of the Naval War College with additional study at the Maritime Advanced Warfighting School, receiving a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies.
His sea assignments include USS Denver (LPD 9) weapons officer; USS George Washington (CVN 73) reactor electrical division officer; USS Klakring (FFG 42) engineer officer; and Commander, Amphibious Squadron Three material officer. He also served as both the executive officer and commanding officer of USS The Sullivans (DDG 68). During his time in command, The Sullivans provided direct support to Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq and Syria, and the opening strikes of Operation Odyssey Lightning in Libya. Additionally, The Sullivans received the Battle Efficiency Award and Retention Excellence Award during his tour.
His shore assignments include Naval Weapons Station, Charleston, South Carolina security officer; Naval Forces, Central Command lead operational planner; and United States Central Command lead strategic planner. He also commanded Afloat Training Group – Western Pacific and most recently served as the executive assistant to the Deputy Under Secretary of the Navy.;
He currently serves as the Destroyer Squadron One deputy commodore.
His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), Joint Service Achievement Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various unit awards.
