CAPT Jason L. Tumlinson

Past Commanding Officer, Afloat Training Group Pacific (ATGSD)

24 March 2021 Captain Jason Tumlinson, a native of Spokane, WA, entered the Navy in 1987.  During enlisted assignments, which included tours in five ships and an aircraft squadron, he was promoted to Boatswain’s Mate Chief Petty Officer in 1999 and then commissioned under the Limited Duty Officer program in 2001.  He graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science in Management Studies.  He earned a Master’s Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College, and is a graduate of the Maritime Advanced Warfighting School. 

His sea duty assignments include USS FORT MCHENRY (LSD 43) as Ship’s Boatswain and USS ESSEX (LHD 2) as First Lieutenant completing over four years forward deployed from Sasebo, Japan.  He was then assigned to Naval Beach Group Two as Detachment Officer in Charge assigned to BATAAN Expeditionary Strike Group.  Additional Department Head assignments include Operations Officer in USS COLE (DDG 67) and Amphibious Squadron FOUR Operations Officer embarked in USS KEARSARGE (LHD 3).  He served as Executive Officer in USS CHUNG-HOON (DDG 93) and Commanding Officer of USS O’KANE (DDG 77).  During sea tours, he deployed numerous times to 5th, 6th, and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility in support of Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, Unified Assistance, Ocean Shield, Odyssey Dawn, Unified Protector, and Ballistic Missile Defense. 

Ashore he served at the Surface Warfare Officers School as Fleet Training (N72) lead instructor and U.S. Pacific Fleet as the Crisis Operational Planning Lead and Current Operations Expeditionary Warfare Officer.  Most recently, he served as N5 Branch Head for Doctrine, Tactics, and Advanced Concepts at the Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center.  He assumed command of ATG San Diego in August 2020.

Captain Tumlinson’s personal awards include the Navy Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Commendation Medal (ten awards), Navy and Marine Achievement Medal (six awards) and multiple campaign, service, and unit awards.
