Commander Jonathan Schermerhorn is a native of Seattle, Washington. He enlisted in the Navy in December 1999 and served on Submarines. He graduated from Montana State University (B.A. in History and Political Science) and received his commission through Officer Candidate School in 2004.

Commander Schermerhorn’ s sea assignments include Combat Information Center Officer and Supply Officer in MHC Crew Valor embarked in USS OSPREY, USS CARDINAL, USS SHRIKE and USS ROBIN from 2004-2006, Training Officer in USS JOHN PAUL JONES from 2006-2008, and Weapons Officer and Combat Systems Officer in USS CHUNG-HOON from 2012-2015.

He has deployed to FIFTH Fleet twice in support of Mine Hunting and Mine Clearance Operations during OIF/OEF and SEVENTH Fleet four times in support of NIMITZ and GEORGE WASHINGTON Strike Groups and BMD missions.

Ashore, Commander Schermerhorn’ s assignments include Force Protection Officer, Commander Navy Region Europe Africa South West Asia and Anti-Submarine Warfare Tactics Officer, Navy Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Command. Prior to completing the Surface Commander pipeline, he was attached to US AEGIS ASHORE MISSILE DEFENSE SYSTEM ROMANIA, completing one deployment to Deveselu, Romania in 2018 where he was acting Executive Officer and Theater BMD Watch Officer.

Commander Schermerhorn’s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards) and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards).
