Commander Van Zeyl is a native of New Lenox, IL. She graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Astronautical Engineering.
Her career as a Surface Warfare Officer includes assignments as Electrical Officer and Combat Information Center Officer aboard USS PORT ROYAL (CG 73), as Training Officer aboard USS RUSSELL (DDG 59), as Weapons Officer and Combat Systems Officer aboard USS VELLA GULF (CG 72), and as Executive Officer aboard USS O’KANE (DDG 77).
Ashore, she completed tours as N7 and Training Liaison Officer at Afloat Training Group Middle Pacific Pearl Harbor, HI; Instructor at Officer Training Command Newport, RI; Force Navigator at Commander Naval Surface Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet in Coronado, CA; and most recent assignment as IAMD/BMD Officer at U.S. THIRD Fleet San Diego, CA.
Commander Van Zeyl holds a master’s degree in American Studies from the University of Hawai’i and a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College.
Her decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal (six awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various individual and unit campaign awards.
