A native of Mexico City, Mexico, Cmdr. Leonardo Giovannelli spent his youth in San Diego, California, and was commissioned through Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida, in 2000.
His sea assignments include Combat Information Center Officer and Assistant Operations Officer in USS Curts (FFG 38), Detachment Officer in Charge for the Belleau Wood Expeditionary Strike Group at Naval Beach Group ONE, Commissioning Chief Engineer in USS Dewey (DDG 105), Chief Engineer in USS Antietam (CG 54), Executive Officer and then Commanding Officer of USS Preble (DDG 88).
Ashore, he served as the Special Mission and Naval Fleet Auxiliary Ships scheduler for Sealift Logistics Command Europe, as a Director Fellow in the Chief of Naval Operations Strategic Studies Group, and as the Air and Missile Defense lead at Surface Warfare Officers School Command. He is currently serving as Commanding Officer, Mariner Skills Training Center, Pacific (MSTCPAC) which was established on 1 October 2020.
Giovannelli holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics conferred from the University of Southern California, a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Phoenix, and a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies conferred from the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.
