CDR David Catterall was raised in Mattituck, New York and graduated in May 2003 from Boston University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and International Relations and was commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Program.  He earned a Master’s in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in June 2010 and an Executive Master’s in Business Administration from the Naval Postgraduate School in April 2020.

CDR Catterall’s afloat assignments include Gunnery Officer aboard USS MILIUS (DDG 69), Auxiliaries Officer aboard USS PELELIU (LHA 5), Weapons Officer aboard USS ANTIETAM (CG 54), Combat Systems and Weapons Officer aboard USS COWPENS (CG 63), and Commanding Officer of USS TORNADO (PC 14) and USS SHAMAL (PC 13).  During these tours he deployed to the Central and Indo-Pacific Command areas of responsibility.

Ashore, he served as an Instructor of Seamanship and Navigation at the U.S. Naval Academy and as the 2nd Tour Department Head Detailer (PERS-412) at Navy Personnel Command. CDR Catterall’s most recent assignment ashore was Branch Chief, Capabilities Integration in the Requirements, Analysis and Resources Directorate (J8) at North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command.

CDR Catterall assumed command of USS FITZGERALD (DDG 62) in November 2021 after serving as Executive Officer from November 2020 until October 2021.

His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), and various unit and expeditionary awards.
