A native of Glen Rock, New Jersey, Captain. Matthew Hall graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science in Economics. Hall is a graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, and holds a master’s degree in Operations Research.

At sea, he served as electrical officer, auxiliaries officer and main propulsion assistant aboard USS John A. Moore (FFG 19), and for his second division officer tour, he was training officer aboard USS Thorn (DD 988). As a department head, his assignments included engineer officer aboard USS Lassen (DDG 82), forward deployed to U.S. 7th Fleet, and materiel officer for Commander, Destroyer Squadron 50, forward deployed to U.S. 5th Fleet in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. Hall most recently served as executive officer and commanding officer of USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53).

His shore tours include the Assessments Division, Chief of Naval Operations, as a sea strike analyst; Naval Sea Systems Command SEA 21, Surface Warfare Directorate as deputy director for surface combatant modernization and life cycle management; U.S. Pacific Command as deputy director for current operations; and Surface Warfare Schools Command, director of maritime warfare and executive officer.

Hall assumed the role of executive officer of USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) on 15 October 2021.
