Commander Zang was raised in Ann Arbor and received a commission from the University of Michigan Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (ROTC) in 2006 with a degree in History. During his shore tour, he completed a Master’s Degree in Finance from the University of Michigan’s School of Business in 2014.
At sea, CDR Zang served as the Auxiliaries and Electrical Officer in USS PORT ROYAL (CG 73) and as the Fire Control Officer in USS MOMSEN (DDG 92). As a Department Head, he served as the Weapons Officer and Combat Systems Officer in USS MILIUS (DDG 69). His tours at sea include two Arabian Gulf, one Indo-Pacific, and one East African Counter-Piracy Deployment.
Ashore, his assignments include serving as the Advanced Warfare Training Program lead at the Center for Surface Combat Systems Headquarters in Dahlgren, Virginia and, most recently, working as the INDOPACOM Fleet Reachback Officer and Warfighting Tactics Instructor (WTI) at the Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center (SMWDC) Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) Division.
His personal decorations include various personal and campaign awards, including the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. He also served aboard ships that have been awarded the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation and the Navy “E” Ribbon.
