Command Master Chief Oonyu entered active service in the United States Navy in 2000. After completion of recruit training, she graduated out of Hospital Corps “A” School and Surgical Technology “C” School, and was assigned to U.S. Naval Hospital Yokosuka, Japan as her first duty station.
Her tours as a Hospital Corpsman included Naval Medical Center San Diego, Naval School of Health Sciences San Diego (NSHS-SD), and USS MAKIN ISLAND (LHD 8). As an instructor at NSHS-SD, she contributed to Surgical Technology program development and became published in Surgical Technology for the Surgical Technologist.
While assigned to USS MAKIN ISLAND (LHD 8), she was selected for Chief Petty Officer. Her Senior Enlisted Leader (SEL) tours included 3d Medical Battalion, 3d Marine Logistics Group as the Intelligence and Communications Chief, Alpha Surgical Company SEL, and SEL for multiple Fleet Marine Force exercises and operations. She served as Directorate of Surgical Services SEL at U.S. Naval Medical Readiness and Training Command Okinawa in support of Forward Deployed Naval Forces before she was selected for the Command Senior Enlisted Leader program. As Command Senior Chief on board USS MIGUEL KEITH (ESB-5) Military Crew (BLUE), she led the crew through commissioning, delivering the expeditionary sea basing platform to 7th Fleet, and maiden deployment. In 2022, she was selected for Command Master Chief. She is currently assigned to USS HALSEY (DDG 97).
Her deployments and operational experience include: Operation BRAVA, Expeditionary Medical Facility Djibouti Horn of Africa, Exercise Cobra Gold, Combined and Joint Operation Balikatan, and two Western Pacific Deployments.
Master Chief Oonyu’s professional education and certifications include: Associates of Arts Degree, Plans Operations and Medical Intelligence, Navy Enlisted Leader Development Facilitator, Certified Project Officer, Certified Postsecondary Instructor, Senior Enlisted Academy Class 225 (8SEA), and Command Master Chief-Chief of the Boat (8CSC/8CMC). She is currently completing her Bachelors in Healthcare Administration, and attends Arizona State University in the Military Studies program.
Master Chief Oonyu’s personal decorations include: Master Training Specialist, Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist, Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist, Enlisted Fleet Marine Force Warfare Specialist, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with four gold stars, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with three gold stars, Army Achievement Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal with two bronze stars, and multiple sea service deployment and unit awards.
