CDR Bobby Wayland is a native of Concord, Massachusetts and enlisted in the Navy as a Cryptologic Technician Administrative (CTA) in 2001; after initial training he was assigned to Naval Security Group Activity San Diego.

CDR Wayland was admitted to the US Naval Academy and graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in English. CDR Wayland served at sea in USS MAHAN (DDG 72) as the Strike Officer during a Standing NATO Maritime Group deployment. Subsequently, he served as Navigator in MAHAN on the ship's 2008-2009 deployment to the COMFIFTHFLT Area of Operations. 

As a department head, CDR Wayland served as the Weapons Officer and then Combat Systems Officer in USS WAYNE E. MEYER (DDG 108).

Ashore, he served as a Tomahawk mission planner on the staff of Commander, US Sixth Fleet during Operation ODYSSEY DAWN and other operations and later assumed duties as the OIC of the Sixth Fleet Strike Cell.

CDR Wayland reported as Executive Officer onboard USS PIONEER in May of 2017 and was in command of PIONEER from October 2018 to March 2020. During that time PIONEER conducted her first FDNF-J patrol and participated in several international MIWEXs.

CDR Wayland’s most recent assignment was as the Junior Military Advisor to the Secretary of the Navy.
