Captain Joel Stewart, a native of Great Falls, Montana, enlisted in 1985 as a Fire Controlman. He advanced to the rate of FC1 before being selected for the Enlisted Commissioning Program. He graduated from the University of New Mexico and was commissioned in 1996. He is a Naval War College’s Command and Staff College distinguished graduate and Halsey Scholar. He is also a US Army War College graduate.
His operational tours include duty as a Tomahawk technician aboard USS Hewitt (DD 966); Damage Control assistant and Operations Officer aboard USS Fife (DD 991); Operations Officer aboard USS Chancellorsville (CG 62); Action Officer on Commander Multi-National Forces-Iraq’s staff; Future Plans for Commander Standing NATO Maritime Group ONE; Commissioning Navigator for USS Makin Island (LHD 8); and Excutive Officer for PCU Anchorage. He was the Commissioning Captain of USS Achorage (LPD 23). Ashore he was Commander Task Force Shore Battle Space in FIFTH Fleet. Most recently he served as Commodore of Maritime Prepositioning Ships Squadron TWO.
His staff tours include Transient Personnel Unit San Diego (LPO and CMAA); Navy Warfare Development Command, (BMD lead); Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center (Startup N6); Officer-in-Charge of Navy Region EURAFCENT DET Bahrain, and Expeditionary Strike Group THREE (Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Plans, and Training).
His awards include the Legion of Merit (3), Meritorious Service Medal (2), Joint Commendation Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal (8), the Navy Achievement Medal (3), Navy Good Conduct Medal (2), various unit citations, and campaign awards.
