A native of Columbia, S.C., Cmdr. Shawn Callihan graduated from Brigham Young University in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts in history. He commissioned from navy Officer Candidate School in 2006. Callihan also holds a Master of Science in geography from the University of South Carolina and a postgraduate certificate in Space Systems Operations from the Naval Postgraduate School.
At sea, Callihan has served aboard USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98), as the Combat Information Center division officer, navigator, and boarding officer; on USS Ashland (LSD 48), forward deployed in Japan; and as the current operations officer at Amphibious Squadron 11 aboard USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6). Selected for early command, Callihan served as executive officer and commanding officer of USS Scout (MCM 8), decommissioning the ship in August 2020. He has deployed to the U.S. Third, Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh areas of operation.
Ashore, he served at North American Aerospace Defense Command / U.S. Northern Command as a Missile and Space deputy chief. He also worked in Mexico City as assistant Navy section chief in the embassy’s office of Defense Coordination. Callihan completed a Navy Legislative Fellowship in the U.S. Senate, assigned to the office of Senator Roger Wicker.
He currently serves as executive officer for USS Manchester (LCS 14) Blue Crew.
His decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Joint Achievement
