Cmdr. Jenna Van Zeyl is a native of New Lenox, Ill. She graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in astronautical engineering. Van Zeyl holds a master’s degree in American Studies from the University of Hawai’i and a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College.

Her career as a Surface Warfare Officer includes assignments as electrical officer and combat information center officer aboard USS Port Roayl (CG 73), as training officer aboard USS Russell (DDG 59), as weapons officer and combat systems officer aboard USS Vella Gulf (CG 72), and as executive Officer aboard USS O’Kane (DDG 77) and USS Princeton (CG 59).

Ashore, she completed tours as training department head and training liaison officer at Afloat Training Group Middle Pacific; an instructor at Officer Training Command; Force navigator at Commander, Naval Surface Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet; and most recent assignment as the IAMD/BMD Officer at U.S. THIRD Fleet.

Van Zeyl current serves as the first commanding officer of USS Savannah (LCS 28) Gold crew.

Her decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (six awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various individual and unit campaign awards.
