Roger L. Young enlisted in the U.S Navy in 1998 and served 6 years as an Electronic Technician, completing 8 strategic deterrent patrols on USS LOUISIANA (SSBN 743G). He received his commission through STA-21 program after graduating from Jacksonville University in May 2007. He is a 2013 graduate of Naval Postgraduate School.
At sea he served as Food Service Officer and Ordnance Officer in USS RODNEY M. DAVIS (FFG 60); Navigator in USS BULKELEY (DDG 84), Weapons Officer in USS JAMES E. WILLIAMS (DDG 95), served as Commanding Officer in USS FIREBOLT (PC10), and served as Staff Director in Commander Destroyer Squadron TWO.
Ashore he served as the Training Department Head at Afloat Training Group Norfolk. He earned a Master Degree in Operations Research from Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California,
His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2 awards) and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (5 awards), as well as various service and campaign awards.
