CDR Gabriel Burgi enlisted in the Navy in 1997 and served as a submarine Torpedoman’s Mate, completing 4 strategic deterrent patrols in USS GEORGIA (SSBN 729B) until 2002 when he was selected for the Broadened Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training (BOOST) commissioning program. In 2002, Petty Officer Burgi reported to the University of Idaho NROTC Unit, commissioning in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Fishery Resources.

After various initial training schools, he was assigned in 2006 to USS NASHVILLE (LPD 13), in Norfolk, VA and served as an Engineering Division Officer and Assistant Air Officer until 2009. LT Burgi then reported as the Navigator onboard USS ARLEIGH BURKE (DDG 51) where he served until 2011 when he transferred to Oregon State University NROTC Unit as an Associate Professor of Naval Science. He earned a Master of Natural Resources degree from OSU in 2013. Following department head school in Newport, RI, he reported in 2014 to USS ESSEX (LHD 2) in San Diego, CA as the Combat Systems Officer until 2016 when he reported to the staff of Commander, Amphibious Squadron Three as the Operations Officer (N3) embarked onboard USS ESSEX and USS AMERICA ARGs. CDR Burgi served as Executive Officer of USS HARPERS FERRY (LSD 49) from June 2021 until February 2023.

Ashore, he reported to Fleet Experimentation Lead at Undersea Warfighting Development Center Detachment San Diego in 2017 where he served until 2019. In 2020, CDR Burgi earned a Master of Arts in Military Operational Art and Science from the Air Command and Staff College in Montgomery, Alabama. 

His decorations and awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards) and various unit and campaign awards.
