CAPT Matthew H. Hall

Commanding Officer, USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000)

17 April 2023 A native of Glen Rock, New Jersey, Captain Hall graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and is a graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, where he holds a master’s degree in Operations Research.

At sea, Hall served his division officer tours in USS JOHN A. MOORE (FFG 19) and USS THORN (DD 988) and as a department head, served in USS LASSEN (DDG 82), forward deployed to U.S. 7th Fleet, and Commander, Destroyer Squadron 50, forward deployed to U.S. 5th Fleet. Hall then served as executive officer and commanding officer of USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DDG 53).

Ashore, he served in Assessments Division, Chief of Naval Operations, as a sea strike analyst; Naval Sea Systems Command Surface Warfare Directorate as deputy director for surface combatant modernization; and U.S. Pacific Command as deputy director for current operations. He most recently served at Surface Warfare Schools Command as executive officer.

Captain Hall served as executive officer of USS ZUMWALT (DDG 1000) from 15 October, 2021 until assuming the role of Commanding Officer on 17 February, 2023.

His decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint and Navy Commendation Medals and various unit citations and campaign awards .
