Capt. Young grew up in San Diego, California, and commissioned upon graduation from the University of Notre Dame in 1995 with a degree in Finance and Business Economics. He was designated a Naval Aviator in May 1997, and holds a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. 

His operational assignments include Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA)-136 aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) and USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67), Carrier Air Wing (CVW)-11 LSO aboard USS Nimitz (CVN 68), VFA-94, and Operations Officer onboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70). 

Ashore, Young served as Fleet Replacement Squadron instructor at VMFAT-101, National Reconnaissance Office Senior Field Representative at USPACOM, and Assistant Chief of Staff for Force Readiness (N40) at Naval Air Forces Pacific. 

Young commanded Provincial Reconstruction Team Paktika in eastern Afghanistan from 2011 to 2012 where his team received the Army Meritorious Unit Commendation. Additionally, he commanded Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) from 2019 to 2022. 

Young assumed duties as Chief of Staff, Carrier Strike Group Nine in October 2022.
