Lieutenant Commander Moyer is from DeLand, Florida. He started his career at the Recruit Training Command, in Great Lakes, Illinois on June 10, 1998. He joined the Navy to be a Nuclear trained Machinist’s Mate. He went to his first ship, the submarine, USS WYOMING (SSBN 742) BLUE in September of 1999. He was selected for the Seaman-to-Admiral 21 Program in 2003. He left WYOMING in July of 2004 after advancing to the rank of Machinist’s Mate First Class.
In 2004, MM1(SS) Moyer started the journey to a commission by attending Broadened Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training (BOOST) and Navy Science Institute (NSI), both in Newport, Rhode Island. He then attended The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Economics, Cum Laude. He received his commission from the Naval ROTC Unit in December 2007.
Ensign Moyer’s first Division Officer tour was onboard the USS OAK HILL (LSD 51) where he served briefly as the Machinery Division Officer before taking over as the Communications Officer for the remainder of the tour. He was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTjg) and transferred in December of 2010 to his second Division Officer tour.
LTjg Moyer served as the Damage Control Officer onboard USS FORREST SHERMAN (DDG 98) where he earned his Engineering Officer of the Watch (EOOW) letter and was promoted to Lieutenant (LT). He then attended The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, California where he earned a Master of Science Degree in Systems Engineering Analysis (MSSEA). He also completed his Joint Professional Military Experience (JPME) Phase One while at NPS. Upon completion of grad school, LT Moyer completed Department Head School and reproted to the USS MESA VERDE (LPD 19), serving as the Combat Systems Officer for his first Department Head tour. He earned his first Tactical Action Officer (TAO) letter on that tour.
For his second Department Head tour, LT Moyer served as the Operations Officer onboard USS MONTEREY (CG 61). During this tour, he was recognized as the 2018 Surface Forces Atlantic Surface Warfare Officer of the Year and promoted to Lieutenant Commander. Wanting to “stay operational,” LCDR Moyer served as the N3 (Operations Department Head) and Chief Staff Officer for COMPHIBRON FOUR. He was then selected to be the Flag Secretary for RDML Katz at Expeditionary Strike Group-2. He was selected for Command at Sea on his first look and transferred to Afloat Training Group (ATG) San Diego. Here, LCDR Moyer was tasked with leading the Pilot Program for Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Training.
He reported to USS CHARLESTON (LCS 18) GOLD in February of 2023 and relieved the watch as the Executive Officer.
