Commander Garfield is a native of Boston, Massachusetts and a 2006 graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science in History. He also holds a Master of Business Administration from Liberty University.

A career Surface Warfare Officer, Commander Garfield served onboard USS RUSSELL (DDG 59), Patrol Coastal Crew FOXTROT embarked in USS FIREBOLT (PC 10), Flag LT to Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group TWO embarked in USS WASP (LHD 1), USS RAMAGE (DDG 61), and USS NORMANDY (CG 60). Prior to assuming command, he served as the Executive Officer in USS STERETT (DDG 104).

Ashore, Commander Garfield served as an Action Officer at the United States Joint Forces Command on the Commander’s Protocol Staff, a Surface Warfare Officer Introduction Instructor at Afloat Training Group, Atlantic, the Assistant Officer-in-Charge at the SWOS Basic Division Officer Course, Norfolk, and the Surface Strike Section Head for the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV N96). Commander Garfield’s most recent shore duty assignment was as a Post Department Head Detailer (PERS-411) and Assistant Captain Detailer (PERS-41C) in Navy Personnel Command, Millington, TN.

His personal decorations and awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (six awards), the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (six awards), and various campaign and unit awards.
